The Shadow Strikes Against Zombie Gangsters On Halloween

The Shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of undead men.

You read that right, SciFi Pulse fans. As a Halloween treat, we present a marvelous episode of The Shadow — vintage radio from 1941 — entitled “Murder from the Grave.” In it, listeners learn that The Shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of undead men.

Usually, The Shadow’s antagonists are mundane criminals whose skillsets contrast with his preternatural mental abilities learned in the mystic East. “Murder from the Grave” is a notable exception. As a result, the episode contains a brilliant character beat in which The Shadow confronts a captured undead mobster, and the mesmerically invisible man is no longer the strangest person in the room. It’s actually quite chilling how matter-of-factly The Shadow and the “ghoul” accept each other’s existences.

While his performance isn’t quite as edgy as that of the great Orson Welles, Bill Johnstone made the role his own. Listeners never doubt that the Shadow will restore the natural order in the end.
