Airing at the Star Wars celebration this weekend, the Star Wars Rebels season 3 trailer featured a new character known as The Bendu – with Rebelsshowrunner Dave Filoni revealing that the character is voiced by Tom Baker.

In the teaser, Baker’s character is heard saying: “Jedi, Sith, the light and the dark. I’m the one in the middle.”

The term Bendu was George Lucas’s original name for the Jedi Knights, who were going to be called the Jedi Bendu.

Within the ‘Star Wars’ universe Bendu  now represents a set of beliefs held by the Bendu monks (the Order of Dai Bendu), which involve the unification of the galaxy through the Force.

During the ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ panel, which was held at London’s ‘Star Wars Celebration’ Filoni explained that “Tom charmed everyone in the room, my wife included” while recording lines for the TV show.

‘Star Wars Rebels’ series 3 also sees the introduction of villain Grand Admiral Thrawn, voiced by Lars Mikkelsen.

‘Star Wars: Rebels’ will premiere in autumn 2016.

Meanwhile, the next movie in the franchise, ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’, will be released in cinemas in December 2016.
